Have you every heard about not judging a book from it's cover? Well that is exactly the case with 1049 Fifth Avenue. It's not a 5th Avenue building! What? That's right. This building is actually around the corner from Fifth and was named a Fifth Avenue building because its developers Duncan Macauley and Jack Heller convinced the Department of Building to name it such. It used to be the Former Adams Hotel, but was renovated into a condominium in 1992. It tends to have larger apartments and has only about 23 units in the building despite being 23 stories tall.
There is an elevator operator, as was common back in the day, along with some new upgrades like refrigerator storage for deliveries, a bicycle room, and a fitness center for residents.
The building was built in 1928 and has some upper floor terraces and a graduated wedding cake like facade with large picture windows. Being located on 86th street just off Fifth also has certain advantages. It is close to both bus and subway transportation and all of the shopping and movies theaters of 86th street.
The Uniqueness of 1049 Fifth Avenue Condo Building
The building is very unique in that it used to be a hotel back in the day and has only a limited number of homes in the building. Very much an exclusive building.
The building is also only a couple blocks from Central Park, one of the main attractions on both the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side. You can go boating, ride your bicycle, go roller blading or simply enjoy a picnic on the grass. Also, this unique building is very close to Museum Mile along 5th avenue. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Frick and the recent addition of the African Museum at 1280 Fifth avenue.
